For business owners, setting up their business is often the biggest decision of their lives. The risks, hard work and stress on one hand, but the freedom, satisfaction and feeling of self achievement on the other.
As the business matures past the initial risky stage of typically 2 years, you quickly begin to realise that the business starts to control you rather than you it. Something which is always there, needs attention, looking after, nurturing and very often the first thing you think about in a morning and the last thing at night.
Of course you get used to it and it becomes a part of your every day.
So many people I talk to say “I didn’t get into business for all of this” sound familiar?
That said, do you really know what you want from your business and where you want to take it?
Very often business owners fall into a trap of giving it their all, only to find themselves in a position of uncertainty and ultimately building their lives around the business rather than the business round their objectives.
The business controls you and your personal plans, with many owners finding themselves having created a job for themselves rather than a business to own.
In short a balance which isn’t sustainable.
Absolutely no problem with this, but when questioned, most people want more and have personal goals they want to achieve. The question in many cases is that their businesses are stopping them from achieving these and they cannot see a way forward.
A starting point is very often to really dig deep and understand the “What & How”
What do you want and then consider how the business can allow you to meet that. All sounds so simple, but in truth often very difficult to unravel when you are so close to it.
Clarity in your every day is difficult to create, but at the same time essential to enable your objectives to be achieved and having a clear plan, can make such a difference to both your current and future plans.
Quite often helps your business push on as well.
